Board of Christian Education

     The Board Of Christian Education met on January 15, 2012 with the following members in attendance: Jane Heckman, Pastor Heckman, Louann Williams, Renee Schoch, Jen Lopata, John Lopata, Robin Heckman and Grace Kern.

Correspondence

Jen received an email from Anita Paul, who is the new coordinator for Global Ministries Child Sponsorship. Ammu is preparing to complete her schooling (high school) and plans to pursue a nursing degree. Items she would need include a wristwatch with second hand and a backpack.

Old Business

  1. Approval of minutes from the December meeting:
    1. Motion by LouAnn
    2. Second by Renee
  1. Sunday School Cleaning
    1. Chapel ceiling tiles will be replaced tomorrow by several members of the Property Committee, as well as the Kern family.
    2. Cleaning will be done this Saturday morning, from 9-12. Items needed: big plastic bags (garbage) and cleaning supplies.

**Because of a snow storm, the cleaning did not take place; we will need to choose another day.**
  1. Ammu
    1. We hope to spend a few weeks in March "introducing her" to the Sunday School students and collecting items or money to send to her.
  1. Advent Craft Fair
    1. LouAnn brought in 2 ideas for NEXT year, since we sometimes have difficulty coming up with craft ideas:
    1. Clothespin Cardinal
    2. Candy bar Reindeer

Class Reports

  1. Sunday School
    1. Christmas & New Year’s Sundays
    1. Christmas Day – no one attended Sunday School
    2. New Year’s Day – the Kemmerer family attended and Jane shared "The Night Before Jesus" story with them, including special bags containing pieces of the Nativity.
  1. Confirmation
    1. The annual Retreat will be held the weekend of January 27th.
    2. Students will spend the morning with the Brooks-Cope class on February 26th.
    3. Students will spend the morning with the High School class on April 29th.
  1. High School
    1. Attendance has been steady at 5 students.
    2. Jen and John Lopata donated 6 Bibles to the class, which will remain in the room: Youth Quest Bible.
    3. We began our Bible Study today, focusing on the book of Genesis.

New Business

  1. Sunday School Calendar
    1. Next Sunday – Family Promise Sunday
    1. Grace will take the students through a "typical day" for a homeless family, including:
    1. Carrying 1 bag with their personal items
    2. Sleeping in a cardboard box
    3. Looking through garbage cans for food
    4. Staying the night in the parsonage & being taken care of by Family Promise
    1. High school students will assist wherever possible.
    1. January 29th – Follow-up lesson on Family Promise
    2. February 19th – Burning of the Palms
    3. March 4th & 11th – Ammu intro. & fundraising, etc.
    4. April 1st (Palm Sunday) – NEW DATE for the Lenten Craft Fair
    1. Craft ideas will be discussed at the February meeting.
  1. Attendance
    1. Mel Everett is now located in the Kindergarten Room – Please try to have attendance and offering ready by 9:20.
