to Consistory during their monthly meeting held on August 25, 2009.
Consistory approved the formation of a Building Committee to lead us forward
on the Faith Lift process.

Faith-Lift Thoughts
How did we get to this place on our Faith journey at
Zion?
1. Consistory
discovered in 2008 we had no blueprints.
2. Consistory hired
Michael Jonn to provide drawings of
our facility.
3. The
Congregation voted in Jan 2009 to remain in
this facility.
4. A collection of
ministry visions was collected from
committees and
ministries.
5. Facility needs
and limitations were noted.
The two
most mentioned areas of need are:
-Too many steps
-Too little parking
6. The committees
and ministries met to share
needs and
concerns.
7. The congregation
shared needs and concerns.
8. A meeting was
held with the Congregation and
Michael Jonn.
9.
Consistory developed a set of priorities from the gathered input.

Faith Lift Building Committee Meeting
Building Committee Minutes
July 8 ,2010
Members Present: Sandy Sillers, Cindy Mengel
Smith, Cheryl Kunkle,
Members of Property Committee Present: Ken
Miller, Ted Smith, Barry Fisher
Also Present: Woodrow Frey, Service
Construction; Michael Jonn, Architect; Pastor Allen Heckman
Absent: James Wentz, Janet Alger
I. Cindy Mengel Smith outlined the agenda for
the evening that was to basically put the information that the building
committee has gathered over the past 1.5 years of study on the table for
discussion between the architect - Michael Jonn, Woodrow Frey of Service
Construction who volunteered his time as a consultant tonight, and the
property committee who knows our current structure inside and out.
II. Pastor Allen then opened the meeting with
a prayer
III. Our ideas and priorities for preparing
our facilities for active ministry in the future have definitely become
more focused. We now have parameters of estimated financial support from
Secor Associates, along with priorities identified through the interview
process that the late Doug Newman completed. These priorities directly
parallel those outlined by the Building Committee, developed through
their interview process.
IV. The discussion centered around these
priorities tonight.
- Raising the Derr Hall Hip Roof and replacing the rest of the
existing roof. Much of the discussion tonight centered around
this as the initial focus of the campaign.
- Elevator installation – including all renovations of
stairwells, hallways, etc. related to that installation
- Interior Renovations
V. Storage over top of Smith Hall. Michael
Jonn recommends this not be used for anything heavy. It is not
guaranteed that these timbers are designed to support heavy loads; you
are dodging cables; lack of flooring; etc.
VI. The property committee raised the question
about the work they are currently doing on electrical upgrades in Derr
Hall. It was agreed all current work on upgrades should be stopped as
this will all change with the interior renovations of the building in
the future.
VII. Everyone present at the meeting tonight
agreed that a Construction Manager will be a necessity as we move
forward with the upgrades. Michael Jonn and Woodrow Frey have developed
a good working relationship through their combined efforts at the Lehigh
Gap Nature Center construction project. Woodrow Frey of Service
Construction, a native of Lehighton, is experienced as both a
construction manager and owner of a Construction Co. Michael and Woodie
were extremely helpful in the meeting tonight. Their combined knowledge
and expertise, and their ability to work together was apparent and just
what we need as we move forward.
VIII. Recommendation to Consistory:
Hire a construction manager for the Faith Lift Building Project.
Interview 3 candidates, one including Woodrow Frey of Service
Construction (phone#610-377-2111). Other considerations may be Alvin H.
Butz, Inc.(phone # 610-395-6871) or Ondra –Huyett Construction Services,
Allentown ( phone# 484-223-3746).
IX. Action Plan:
Next meeting July 22, 2010 will be combined
with the building committee and the property committee. Woodrow Frey
will have a proposal ready for the position of Construction Manager at
Zion Church for review and discussion. This will be presented to
Consistory for the July meeting. Michael Jonn will have new
architectural drawings ready that incorporate our newly focused goals
for the building upgrades. These will be presented at the next
Consistory meeting.
Congregational meeting planned for August 15th
when the new drawings and plans will be formally presented to the
congregation. Pastor Allen will take care of the appropriate written
announcement of this meeting.
Respectfully submitted,
Cheryl Kunkle, acting recorder
Addendum: This meeting was productive,
informative, and exciting! There is a team forming around the purpose of
preparing our facility for ministry into the future led by folks with a
vision, professional consultants, our senior Pastor, and the Holy
Spirit. How can we fail?
